As part of a gas safety package, the NYC Council passed Local Law 152 in 2016. Effective January 1, 2020, building owners in New York City are required by Local Law 152 to have their gas pipes examined at least every four years.
In response to various recent gas-related problems in New York City caused by improper connections, such as theft or service diversion, Local Law 152 was adopted. Local legislators enacted local regulatory reforms to increase gas safety in New York City, such as requiring periodic interior gas inspections from the point of entry to the end-use equipment, which would effectively cover all pipelines in commercial buildings with three or more family units.
Inspections of gas pipe systems must be performed by or under the direct supervision of a professional and certified Licensed Master Plumber on behalf of the building owner.
